License terms

Rune is a text editor for macOS, sold by banast.as ("we"). Purchases are processed by Lemon Squeezy, our reseller and merchant of record, which also handles payment, sales tax and receipts.

• Trial. You can use Rune free for 7 days from its first launch on each Mac. After that, Rune is read-only until it has a license: typing, pasting and anything else that adds text needs one. What you've already typed keeps being saved, uploaded and merged with your other Macs' versions, and the recovery journal, History, conflict resolution, opening, copying and the Sync Log keep working.
• License. A purchase gives you a personal, non-transferable license to use Rune on your own Macs, up to 3 at a time. You can move a license by deactivating it on one Mac (Settings › License) and activating it on another. Business use is fine.
• Updates. The license includes updates to Rune 1.x. A future major version may be a paid upgrade.
• Please don't share or resell license keys, or remove the license check.
• Your data is your responsibility. Rune keeps a recovery journal and a local History of your files so that problems can be recovered from, and it merges rather than overwrites, but no software can rule out every failure of disks, networks or iCloud. Keep backups of anything you can't afford to lose.
• No warranty. Rune is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We aren't liable for indirect or consequential damages or lost data, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for Rune.

We may update these terms; the date above shows the latest version. Using Rune after a change means accepting the updated terms.

Privacy

Rune has no accounts, analytics, telemetry, ads or tracking. What you write stays in your files, on your Macs and in your iCloud Drive.

• Your files. Rune never sends your files anywhere itself. Files in iCloud Drive (your scratch.md is in iCloud Drive › Rune) go only through Apple's iCloud Drive, under Apple's terms and privacy policy; Rune tells iCloud when to upload a version and asks it for newer ones. iCloud Drive is end-to-end encrypted only when Advanced Data Protection is on. Files outside iCloud Drive stay on your Mac.
• Notes beside your files. So your Macs can tell which version each one has, Rune writes small notes in a hidden .nib folder beside each file it syncs in iCloud Drive: the Mac's name, the file's name, and the SHA-256 hash, size and time of the versions that Mac uploaded and loaded. Never the text. They sync through your iCloud Drive like the files, and go nowhere else.
• Kept on your Mac only. The recovery journal, History (saved versions of your files, 30 days by default), the Sync Log and Rune's settings are kept in your Mac's Application Support folder and preferences, and are never synced or sent.
• Updates. Once a day, Rune checks https://rune.banast.as/appcast.xml for a newer version (turn this off in Settings › General). The request includes Rune's version number, and updates are signed so only genuine ones install.
• Licensing. Once licensing is switched on: to activate a license, Rune sends your license key and your Mac's name to Lemon Squeezy's license service (api.lemonsqueezy.com), and checks the key there about once a week. Lemon Squeezy returns whether the key is valid and the name and email it was bought with, which Rune shows in Settings.
• Import from Sublime Text reads Sublime's settings and color schemes on your Mac, changes nothing there, and sends nothing.
• Purchases. Lemon Squeezy collects your payment and billing details as merchant of record, under its own privacy policy. We receive your name, email address and order details, which we use to send receipts and license keys and to answer support requests. We don't sell or share them.
• This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics or trackers. It's hosted on Cloudflare, which processes requests to deliver the pages. When you click Buy, the checkout opens from Lemon Squeezy (their script loads only then), and Lemon Squeezy may set its own cookies to run the checkout.

Refunds

30 days, no questions asked. If Rune isn't right for you, email me@banast.as (or reply to your receipt) within 30 days of purchase and we'll refund you in full through Lemon Squeezy. A refunded license is deactivated; what you typed stays in your files.
